July 27, 2005

Canada Post has sent a National Notice indicating that the Ajax Retail operation will be shut down permanently on October 29, 2005. The “C&D” operation with Letter Carriers, Clerks and RSMC’s will move on November 21, 2005 to the new facility at 265 Harwood Ave. N.

The Local had been pressuring the employer locally to reveal the plans as far in advance as possible. This would give the employees the maximum amount of time to bid on other positions.  Unfortunately the National employer gave the absolute minimum notice required after sending notices to the customers saying the facility will close.

While the writing has been on the wall, due to the silence of the corporation, the Local has been suggesting the move to a new facility was the perfect opportunity to grow the business and expand the Retail operation. Retail revenues have dropped recently in Ajax as a result of the changes to exit ramp at Highway 401 and Harwood Ave. being removed. Moving north of Highway 401, were there is considerable growth, provided an opportunity for CPC to relocate the Retail operation to Kingston Rd., in a high traffic mall or industrial setting. The Local wanted to expand on the recent successes at West Beaver Creek, 280 Progress, or the Loblaws Super Store concept on Lakeshore Avenue in Toronto.

Canada Post’s own studies show a higher profit from CUPW retail operations when dealing with business customers and a higher customer satisfaction level. Canada Post’s plan to grow the business seems to be to shut down retail outlets.

Consultations have not taken place yet. Once they have taken place, further information will be provided.
