SLIPS AND FALLS
As we dig out from the first storm of the Winter and curse the customers, city and employer for not clearing their walkways, driveways, roads and employee entrances or parking lots, it is an appropriate time to remind members in delivery functions to be careful in hazardous weather conditions. Two years ago we were hit with storms and "Mayor Mel" called in the Army. The injury rate in that month peaked to its highest in quite some time. It is important to do your work safely and, if need be, book overtime in bad weather. Do not let the employer pressure you into working too fast on outside functions in bad weather. The National Joint Health & Safety Committee has chosen several sites to be part of a survey for "Slips and Falls", and 280 Progress is one of those locations. Details will be collected around "Slips and Falls", analyzed and provided to the National Levels of the Union and Employer. Please participate in these surveys if asked, and if you have an injury ensure that you report it to the employer. At 280 Progress Ave., since November 1, 1998 to date, there have been 65 "Slips and Falls" Injuries requiring WSIB Form 7's being completed. In this same time period there have been 648 WSIB Form 7's received by this office with 263 of these being listed as "Slips and Falls"! Each time an employee seeks medical treatment, is off work, or is on modified duties for more than seven days, one of these forms must be generated. The Employer is providing "Super Soles" to all employees and repairs to those who need new cleats / screws. This also applies to temporary employees. If you have any suggestions or concerns, generally, around "Slips and Falls", specific problems, problem sites (snow clearance, public or CMB's), and other ideas, please call or send them to the 1st Vice President of the Local, Chair of the CUPW Health & Safety Committees. In Solidarity
